The Needed Transformation Of The Beauty Community
Before and After Effects of Switching to More Sustainable Beauty Brands
There must be a change in the way that the beauty community operates. The planet is being destroyed at an unprecedented rate and beauty companies need to take more action in preventing this from escalating any further.
In this article we will discuss the ways that the beauty community are currently working and how their unsustainable practise is harming the environment. Afterwards, some much needed tips on improvement will be given!
Before - Packaging, Packaging, Packaging…
We have talked about this before, but the beauty community wastes too much because of the high levels of packaging that comes with the tiniest of products. Around 70% of waste in the beauty industry is made up of packaging. This is way too high and needs to be cut down immediately. With the majority of this packaging being plastic, the effects on ocean and marine life are very clear to see.
After - Recycle, Recycle, Recycle…
One easy and effective way for the beauty community to change is by using more sustainable packaging. By cutting plastic out of the equation, there will be less landfills pilling up and ocean life will be protected. Another alternative is having reusable products to completely eliminate waste. Whilst initially buying reusable containers might be expensive, in the long run paying for refills ends up being more cost efficient - not to mention the benefits it has on the environment.
Before - Harmful Ingredients
There are numerous harmful ingredients, not only for our skins but animals too, that are present in our beauty products.
For example palm oil is causing massive problems for the environment due to its high demand. Some beauty products that contain palm oil are: shampoos, conditioners, mascara, foundation, concealer.
Furthermore, many of these products are tested on animals before being sold. This is something that must be stopped! By applying pressure to these big companies together we can force change.
After - Safe and Healthy Skin
There are a lot of safe alternatives for our beauty products that don’t include these harmful ingredients. You can check the ingredients to ensure that it doesn’t include palm oil. Alternatively, there are lots of other healthy and natural products that can be used such as bar shampoos which also has minimal packaging.

Before - Air Pollution
Volatile organic compounds (VOCS) are toxic air pollutants that have been found in beauty products such as deodorants, hairsprays and some perfumes. The growing carbon dioxide emissions is something that you may not link with beauty products but the beauty industry is greatly contributing to this disaster.
After - Cleaner Air
An easy remedy for this is to do a quick google of your deodorants etc to see if there have been any studies linking that specific brand to growing CO2 emissions. If they are linked, there are several organic deodorants that have also been found to be healthier and gentler to our skin!
Hopefully this article has given you some thought for reflection about the effects of the beauty industry, with hope in some easy ways to fix these problems.
