The phrase “Conscious Consumerism” is something that we feel very strongly about at Green Harmony and we would love our followers to be Conscious Consumers.
What do we mean?
“Conscious Consumerism” refers to the practice of making deliberate and informed choices as consumers by considering the social, environmental, and ethical impacts of our purchasing decisions.
We have come up with 5 easy ways to do this:
1. Read Ingredient Labels
Being aware of the what the ingredients are in the products that we buy is a crucial aspect in being sustainable. Look out for ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, and sulphates which are some toxins that are harmful to the environment.1 Furthermore, some shampoos add artificial fragrances which are also detrimental to the bio-diversity of the earth.
2. Opt for Sustainable Packaging
When buying products make sure to check that the packaging is biodegradable or recyclable. This will help lower waste and avoid rubbish being sent to landmines. It will also mean that there will not harmful chemicals being leaked into the environment. The avoidance of single-use plastics is also important in the commitment to sustainability. By not buying these products, manufactures will be forced to switch to more sustainable options.
3. Choose Cruelty-Free and Vegan Products
To be a respectful member of the planet we must show compassion and care for animals as we all share the same place. Therefore, buying products where it is clear that no animals were harmed during the process is a key foundation of being a Conscious Consumer. Furthermore, the use of beauty products that are vegan is important in highlighting the message that the exploitation of animals for human gain is morally wrong.
4. Consider The Products Lifespan
By buying products that are high-quality means that there will be less waste produced as they have a larger lifespan. By choosing these types of products means that there will be less need to buy more, which is both economical for the consumer and beneficial to the planet.
5. Buy From Sustainable and Ethical Brands
Doing some research on the companies ethical practices before buying the product is also a crucial step in ensuring your commitment to be a Conscious Consumer. Look our for Fair Trade, B Corp or PETA approved labels on the products. By exploring the websites of these brands, especially by looking at their mission or vision, can also provide an insight into their values. 2
